'Persona 5 Royal' first impressions: Same same but different She also attended an entirely different school, so she’d never heard the rumours tarring me as a dangerous delinquent (which were absolutely false, by the way).Īll Hifumi saw was my plain, unexciting, everyday self, unassuming in a standard Shujin Academy uniform and heavy framed glasses. Aside from being the catalyst for a small side adventure, she had nothing to do with the Phantom Thieves. Shy, strange Hifumi was largely disconnected from my world of supernatural percussive psychology, and she had never met my cunning alter ego Joker. I wanted to keep my love life separate from my probably illegal mind heists as much as it was possible to do so. Our mission to beat the living daylights out of the physical manifestations of people’s corrupt psyches was too important to compromise. While many Persona 5 players’ hearts were stolen by badass biker Makoto, starting a romantic relationship with a fellow Phantom Thief felt too much like dating a colleague to me. Our relationship grew closer, more intimate, slowly budding into a fragile high school romance. I supported her, silently intervening to help with her troubles. Eventually she grew to trust me, confiding her difficult relationship with her mother and the pressures she felt as a high-profile shogi player. Evening after evening I would return, and evening after evening Hifumi taught me. She became my instructor, teaching me strategy through the Japanese board game and unwittingly sharpening my combat skills. I first met Hifumi Togo in a quiet Kanda church, a peaceful sanctuary she often visited to practice shogi. Both Iwai’s airsoft shop and Tae’s medical clinic were closed.Īnd there was no sign of Hifumi, my beautiful shogi queen. But I had no idea how my former teacher Kawakami was. Café Leblanc’s curry king Sojiro was still around, allowing me to reclaim my makeshift bedroom in the shop’s attic. However, after the initial excitement of our reunion died down, I began to wonder about my friends who didn’t moonlight as mind criminals. Reunited in Persona 5 Strikers, our gang of merry misfits were now taking our show on the road, driving across Japan to apply unsolicited mental recalibration to a new batch of unsuspecting targets - and dive into some new hack-and-slash gameplay. There's no way that doesn't change the trajectory of your life in some way.įortunately, none of them seemed particularly traumatised by the experience. We had spent an entire year supernaturally invading cruel adults' minds, our mismatched gang of misunderstood teens literally fighting the dark desires inside people and forcing them to repent. I was curious to see what they’d gotten up to in my absence, and how our experiences together might have impacted them. Though only six months had passed for them since we attacked and dethroned god, I hadn’t properly spent time with our ragtag group in three years (barring one weird dancing fever dream). I was more eager to catch up with my friends and fellow Phantom Thieves: Ann, Yusuke, Makoto, Futaba, Haru, Morgana - even Ryuji. I’ll admit, Hifumi wasn’t at the forefront of my mind when I first returned to the world of turn-based Japanese roleplaying game Persona 5. Where is my girlfriend and what have you done with her? OK Persona 5 Strikers, I’m giving you one chance to come clean.

More modern jazz has become so diverse stylistically that it becomes almost impossible to list modern standards. There is a very comprehensive repertoire list in The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine. This is by no means a comprehensive list, it is based mostly on jazz of the 30s – 50s and useful repertoire can vary from region to region in the world. This system had a number of additional benefits as well – it guarantees that the creature is compatible with the game’s animation system (which we will talk more about later in the video), and also allowed the creature to be stored using a much smaller amount of data than a traditional 3D model, which meant that creatures could easily be shared between games and uploaded to the Sporepedia. Each rigblock has several degrees of freedom that let them be scaled, stretched, and transformed in pre-defined ways.īy combining these two systems, Spore struck a good balance of open-ended player creativity and pre-made artistic assets that ensured even the most inexperienced player could make something that looks cool and functions well within the game. A rigblock is an individual, hand-crafted body-part that can be snapped onto your creature. While metaballs are good for defining the general shape and structure of the creature, the more complicated pieces – hands, mouths, spikes, etc, were created using rigblocks. You can also shrink or grow individual metaballs to make parts of the creature fatter or thinner. As you stretch the limbs or spine, more metaballs get added to ensure a smooth, continuous surface. In the Spore Creature editor, metaballs are used for the main body and limbs of the creature. When the metaball is alone this surface looks like a sphere, but when two metaballs get close, their functions get added together, which is why their two surfaces get merged into one. While I won’t go into all the technical details here, the basic idea is that each metaball has a function associated with it that defines the surface of the metaball. Metaballs, on the other hand, are what is called an “implicit surface”, which means it is defined by a mathematical function, rather than points in space. Your standard 3D model is what is called a “mesh”, and it is defined by a bunch of points in 3D space, connected by edges. Metaballs are interesting because they work differently than most 3D models do. What is a metaball? It’s basically these gloopy 3D balls that join together when they get close to each other. This challenge was accomplished in 2 main ways – using Metaballs, and Rigblocks. The challenge was finding an interface that allowed players with no prior experience to easily create reasonable looking creatures, while still allowing a huge range of possible designs. The other extreme would be to simply use pre-made models, which is what most games do. #SPORE CREATURE CREATOR TOOL PROFESSIONAL#However, anybody who’s used these types of tools can tell you that there is a pretty steep learning curve, and most players aren’t professional 3D modelers. On the one hand, they could have simply shipped a full-blown 3D modeling tool like Blender or Maya with the game, and let players create anything their minds could think of. Getting this to work was a challenge from both a game-design standpoint, and a technical one.įrom a game-design perspective, the designers had to find a balance between two extremes. Without further ado, let’s get started.įirst, let’s take a look at modeling – the creature creator allows players to sculpt a huge variety of creatures, from simple worms to incredibly complex, realistic monsters with hundreds of separate components. Basically, this video was really difficult to make, so if you could leave a like, comment, share, or subscribe to this channel, I would really appreciate it. That’s because a lot has happened while I’ve been working on this video, including moving to a new apartment, getting Covid, discovering a blood clot in my lungs, and having a minor existential crisis. But how does any of this actually work? Let’s find out by exploring the modeling, texturing, and animation of the player created creatures in Spore.īefore we get started, some of you may have noticed that it’s been a while since I’ve posted on this channel. Spore’s creature editor lets players craft custom creatures that they can actually control as playable characters in the game. In Spore, players can guide the evolution of a species of creatures from the cell stage to a galactic civilization, but the part of the game that stands out the most to me, and I think most players, is the creature creator. Let’s talk about Spore – the 2008 life simulation strategy game made by Maxis Studios and designer Will Wright. What’s up designers, and welcome back to Rempton Games. The add-on lasted about three hours for me versus eight for the original release, though part of that differential comes from the fact that Keith gains money directly from Valkyrie‘s story missions, whereas the player has to rely solely on time-eating sidequests to keep him afloat in the original release. Galaxy on Fire‘s hero decides this not cool once he’s essentially assigned to steal from the researchers he made friends with in the main release, and his turning coat against his new employers leads him to a climactic confrontation that’s arguably way cooler than anything he got himself wrapped up in previously. In the extension, Keith – now famous but still up for anything lucrative – falls in with a shadowy organization that employs him as their test monkey for cutting edge weapons technology they’ve pirated from others. Maxwell, fresh off his victory over the malignant Voids. Galaxy on Fire 2 wrapped up by letting players continue to freely explore the cosmos as Keith T. Now that we’ve spent lots of quality time with the add-on, we can report that while the new ships, equipment, and locations are nice, it’s really Valkyrie‘s generous helping of brand new story missions that make it a truly Galaxy-class IAP worth forking over an extra $4.99. As you can no doubt tell from last November’s in-depth review, the original release of Galaxy on Fire 2 really tickled iFanzine’s fancy! We count ourselves among the untold thousands of happy Fishlabs customers who’ve been eagerly anticipating the extension Valkyrie, which the developer rolled out as an In-App Purchase on April 28. |
